An extremely worthy Facebook post with an important message has gone viral and that makes me smile.
19-year-old Ishmael Gilbert was ringing up shoppers at a Target in Indiana when an elderly woman came up next in line. She wanted to pay for her purchase in all change. This caused some people on the growing line to leave to find other registers. The woman was shaking and nervous, worried she was counting too slow for the rest of the line. That’s when Ishmael patiently helped her count the change. He reassured her several times she was doing fine.
Sarah Owen Bigler and her daughter were behind that woman. Sarah had a long day at work, and was in a rush. She admits she started growing impatient. Then, she saw her daughter watching intently as Ishmael helped the woman count. That’s when it dawned on her.
I realized I hadn’t been inconvenienced at all. That my daughter was instead witnessing kindness and patience and being taught this valuable lesson by a complete stranger; furthermore, I realized that I too needed a refresher on this lesson.
Bigler snapped a quick picture and posted it to Facebook. It’s been shared more than 20,000 times. Bigler was brave when she admitted she was impatient, but then was inspired to change her mind. Her post has helped remind us of the importance of being kind and patient. Ishmael says he treats all customers the same, the same way he would want to be treated. Thank you, Ishmael for setting a fine example of what we all should strive for.
