My coworkers at WUSA9, Ellison Barber, Kurt Brooks and Lee Jenkins, worked on a story that’s getting a lot of buzz. It tugged at my heartstrings, and I’m betting it will tug on yours.
An Annapolis, Maryland photographer named Stephanie Smith heard about another photographer that refused to take pictures of a child with Down Syndrome. So, she put out a Facebook post offering her photography services for free for kids with special needs. She says the amount of requests she receive were “insane.”
“It’s to make them feel important. Make them feel special, make them feel original, and to make them feel no different than any other kid,” Smith explained. “I know the financial strains that special needs families, disabled families have, and it’s a luxury to be able to get family portraits done.”
It’s a beautiful story about a person with a beautiful heart who wants all kids to feel beautiful, if only just for the hour they are being photographed. You can watch it here.
